Bangladesh: Kali Temple Attacked in Mongla, Idol Vandalized; 3 Madrasa Students Arrested


Two idols vandalized in a Kali temple in Mongla. The incident took place at Kanai Nagar public temple in Kainmari area of ​​Chandpai union of the upazila on 7th of August, Sunday night.  The identity of the perpetrators of the attack is yet to be ascertained, but the police have arrested three suspects.

The arrested are - Md.  Rahat Chowdhury (20), Md.  Nayan Munshi (24) and Md.  Asif Khan (22).  All three arrested are madrasa students and are resident of same area. 

Locals said that there was a ruckus in front of the temple on Saturday because of the football game. The temple committee forbade playing football in the front ground of the temple. There is a lot of debate about this. At this time both sides threatened each other. Then, last night, the Kali and Shiva idols in the temple were found broken.

Asif Iqbal, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mongla-Rampal Circle, said that the incident was visited early in the morning after receiving the information. Three people involved in the altercation were arrested and brought to the police station. The root cause is under investigation.  Police are deployed in that area.
