Assam: Muslims open Miya museum; 1 arrested and museum sealed

Amid controversies, the Goalpara district administration has sealed the Miya museum. Also one person was arrested by police. The museum was set up at Lakhimpr of the district. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the intellectuals to remain alert on such challenges.

Recently, an organization named ‛Assam Miya(Asomiya) Parishad’ set up a museum. And that drew huge controversy and criticism. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized such attempts. After this, the Goalpara administration sealed the museum and detained president of the organization M Mahar Ali and arrested general secretary Abdul Baten Seikh.

CM said, ‛Barring Lungi, the items kept in the museum as Miya heritages are under use among various ethnic groups of Assam for generations. How can the plough be a Miya heritage? Various ethnic groups have been using this agricultural instrument in the state from the tome immemorial. They need to reply to the goverment how they can claim various items used by the ethnic groups of Assam as theirs.’

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also said, ‛They will also have to give a detailed reply to the goverment on the funds spent for the museum. When I raised my voice against Miya verses, Miya schools and Miya culture, a section of intellectuals in the state branded me as communal.’ ‛Why they are silent in this, questioned Himanta.
